Planting & Care for Brandon Arborvitae
Choosing the Right Location
- Select a location with well-draining soil and full to partial sunlight.
- Ensure the area has enough space for the mature size of the Brandon Arborvitae
Digging the Hole
- Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and slightly shallower than its height.
- Loosen the soil in the hole to promote root growth.
Planting B&B Trees
- Notice where the base of the trunk flairs out from the tree - this is called the root
flair. This root flair should show when the tree is planted. If necessary, add soil under the ball so the root flair is exposed. - Place fertilizer packets into the bottom of the hole.
- Backfill ½ of the hole with soil and completely saturate the soil with water.
- Once the tree is straight and located as desired:
- Cut and remove twine.
- Remove or bend back top â…“ of metal basket.
- Remove exposed burlap from top of ball.
- Fill the hole to the top of ball with soil, then soak well with water and let settle.
Pruning - After Planting
- B & B evergreens don't have to be pruned at the time of planting. Except for any broken branches from shipping, or to thin out a heavily branched plant that will help in the transplanting process and the appearance of your new planting.
Mulching
- Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base of the Brandon Arborvitae to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Keep the mulch away from the trunk to prevent rot.
Winter Care
- Water the Arborvitae well in the fall before the ground freezes to prevent winter desiccation.
- Consider wrapping young Arborvitaes with burlap to protect against winter winds if you live in a very extreme climate.
Monitoring and Care
- Regularly check the soil moisture and adjust watering accordingly.
- Keep an eye on the overall health of the Arborvitae and address any issues promptly.
Growth Expectations
- The Brandon Arborvitae typically grows at a moderate rate and reaches a mature height of 12-15' and width of 6-8'.
