Whether you’re a homesteader creating a whole orchard or just adding one fruit tree for fun, these dual purpose plants can add value to your home. While there are many great options available, it’s important to know a few things before getting started. Your hardiness zone is important, but it’s also useful to know if the plant you want can produce fruit on its own (self-pollinating / self-fertile) or if it needs a buddy (cross pollinator). If you have room for just one fruit tree, be sure it’s self-fruitful or check to see if any neighbors in the area have a plant that can serve as a pollinator. If you are putting in an orchard, choosing different cultivars will do the trick. Growing your own fruit is such a rewarding experience!
